Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to secure basic data for efficient domestic waste management adapting to changes in the social environment.

Methods: The amount of domestic waste generated in the whole country, Jeollabuk-do, and Iksan, a small and medium-sized city, before and after the outbreak of COVID-19 was analyzed. Characteristic changes of domestic waste were investigated. The relationship between online shopping use and domestic waste generation was investigated.

Results: The amount of domestic waste generated is 6.6% after the outbreak from an annual increasing rate of around 4% before the outbreak of COVID-19. The use of online shopping and the amount of domestic waste generated increased proportionally. Changes in the characteristics of waste increased rapidly in paper and styrofoam, while food waste has decreased somewhat. The rapid increase in specific items of waste due to social factors has hindered resource circulation due to difficulties in securing recycling companies.

Conclusion: The pandemic has had a significant impact on the amount and characteristics of domestic waste. Waste was mainly discharged from packaging materials and containers of online shopping and delivery food. Therefore, it is necessary to improve packaging materials and develop reusable containers to reduce domestic waste.
